The Denton Record-Chronicle reported in March 2016 that a student had filed a lawsuit accusing the university of failing to properly investigate her allegation that she had been sexually assaulted by a male library employee at his apartment. The university asserted in court filings that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the defendants had no knowledge of the student's complaint.
The institution has affirmed its commitment to victims of sexual assault, collected resources online, and formed a committee on sexual violence. The university has also used Haven, an online program, to train new incoming students, and has started a campaign known as #UNTSpeaksOut.
The University of North Texas failed to properly investigate the sexual assault of a student by a staff member in 2015, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed against the university on Feb. 24.
