Sexual assault gained attention on the campus when the Education Department determined in 2011 that the university had violated the campus-crime-reporting law known as the Clery Act for failing to disclose two sexual assaults in 2007 and for maintaining insufficient campus-safety policies. Washington State was one of the initial 55 colleges under Title IX investigation in this wave of federal enforcement as announced by the Education Department in May 2014.
In May 2016, BuzzFeed reported that a female student had been expelled from Washington State after she was found responsible for sexual misconduct in connection with her alleged assault of a male peer. The woman insisted that she was falsely accused and filed a counterclaim, though the full investigation resulted in her expulsion. The university's Title IX coordinator told BuzzFeed that Washington State "takes every complaint of sexual assault seriously."
The institution has affirmed its commitment to victims of sexual assault, collected resources online, and hired additional investigators. Some faculty members have pledged their support in “the fight against sexual assault.”
