The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Educational ·Opportunities Section ("Department" or "United States"), has completed the above-referenced investigation and compliance review of Wheaton College's ("College") handling of allega...
This investigation, which was prompted by a complaint, was conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice. Nearly all of the other federal investigations listed in this tracker have been conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.
The Justice Department announced in September 2016 that its investigation had been resolved. The inquiry examined the college's handling of assault and harassment complaints over a period of about three and a half years. The department credited the college with improving its response to such complaints "significantly" since 2012. But it added that Wheaton's response to some reports during the period studied had fallen short of Title IX's requirements or raised compliance concerns.
The college agreed to revise its policies as part of the resolution agreement. It said in a written statement that it was committed to fostering an environment that was free from discrimination, and to "continuing to work on this issue vigorously."
